On People with Range
As I get older, I’ve come to value people with range.
Not just those who are on the same wavelength as me, but those who can move up and down the scale. People who can stay grounded, talk about practical things, everyday problems—and then, without effort, shift the conversation toward something deeper.
People who talk only about low, narrow goals are exhausting.
People who speak only about “higher things” are irritating.
One feels small.
The other feels detached.
But people who can navigate between these two extremes are different.
With them, you can joke and stay light.
And you can also learn something real.
They know when to simplify and when to go deeper.
They don’t confuse seriousness with depth, or abstraction with wisdom.
Range is what makes a conversation alive.
And over time, those are the people I value most.
